Cold sores usually appear around the mouth or lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. After the initial infection, the cold sore virus becomes inactive or dormant waiting to reappear during times of prolonged stress, or when our immune system weakens. Most persons have been exposed to cold sores but their immune system suppresses reoccurrences. Touching a cold sore can spread the infection to other sites or persons. Washing hands is of utmost importance, and it is recommended to use gloves when applying ointment to a child's cold sore.

 Since the herpes simplex virus feeds on an excessive intake of the amino acid arginine, diets avoiding citrus fruits and nuts should be followed. Supplementation with the amino acid Lysine is advised. This site explains that arginine speeds cell replication causing cold sore outbreaks, while lysine decreases cell replication. Yogurt with an ideal ratio of lysine to arginine is recommended as a beneficial food to prevent cold sores.

Clinical studies verify that Melaleuca oil has antiviral effects on the herpes simplex virus. Apply T36-C5 at the first hint of a possible cold sore infection. Repeat every hour until the lesion either disappears or comes to a head. If it comes to a head continue to apply T36-C5 once every 2 hours, followed by MelaGel or Renew Lotion. When out in the sun, protect your lips against excessive sun exposure by making it a habit to apply Sun Shades Lip Balm SPF 15.

My family has a history of severe cold sores. Many times they were so bad that they would progress up to, and even into, the nose. I have been plagued with cold sores for many years, needing prescription medication to help clear them up. Still they were very painful and created craters in my lip. Once Melaleuca oil T36-C5 is applied to the sore the pain quickly subsides. MelaGel is also effective. The last cold sore I had came on suddenly over the weekend and I could not obtain the medication from the pharmacy, to my amazement the sore was nearly fully contained by the time Monday came and I no longer felt I would need the prescription medicine. I have also been taking the Vitality Total vitamins and have not had any cold sores over the summer, which is unusual since the sunlight will normally cause me to get them. Love Melaleuca for great products that make me feel and look better.

I used to get cold sores monthly. I read that taking ProVex-Plus and Activate would help build up my body to be able to resist them. I started taking both supplements and was able to stop the recurrence of my cold sores. I have been able to drop the Activate on a regular basis and keep them away by only adding ProVex-Plus to my regular supplements. Using these steps I have been able to keep from getting cold sores except for rarely when I am much stressed. In the rare times that I get a cold sore now, I can prevent it from growing into a full-fledged one by dabbing T36-C5, or T40-C3, when I first feel the tingling begin. I follow up with Sei Bella Lip Treatment to add moisture to my lips since they usually seem to dry out at this time.

Love, love, love T36-C5 Melaleuca oil. For years I have had to buy prescription medication to work on cold sores and not always with good results. The cold sores would take about a week to disappear and they would end up on either side of my mouth - not pleasant to look at or feel. When I became a Melaleuca customer, I tried the T36-C5 oil with trepidation. I dabbed a small amount onto my finger and on each cold sore. For as long as I can remember, I always came down with a cold sore when I was stressed. I used Carmex to help soothe the sores, but they would still get very big, itch, and take about a week before they would even go away. Since joining Melaleuca last October, I found out that the Melaleuca oil helped with many ailments, and decided to dab a little bit on when I felt a cold sore coming on. My grandson was 8 years old when his Mother was in an accident and she was taken from us. I found myself helping my single parent son with his 3 young boys (age 8, 4, and 1). As most of us know stress can cause a lot of illness and I believe cold sores are one of them. Dalton had one in his mouth and when I saw it I remembered that someone had said that Melaleuca oil was a good remedy for treating this condition. So....I got a Q-tip in one hand and the bottle of Melaleuca Oil in the other and applied it to a reluctant young boy. He complained that it tasted awful. But this time Dalton brought me the Q-tip and the bottle and said "Mema hurry, it tastes awful." Being a 15-yr old teen, I used to get cold sores so often that I could tell when one was coming. About 15 years ago I used to get such terrible cold sores, they would literally go across my gum line all the way around my mouth. Regular mouthwashes were painful to use because of the alcohol content. The only product that did help tasted nasty and I'm sure it wasn't good for me. Since becoming a Melaleuca customer, I have had one small flare up that was gone within two days of using the mouth rinse and tooth polish three times a day. We know that cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus which is similar to the one that causes genital herpes. Because this is such an embarrassing situation, I'd never asked about it. I was given a copy of The Melaleuca Wellness Guide when I became a customer. In the first few chapters there is a story about people with herpes. I began to build my immune system up with the vitamins. I've always known that drugs all have side effects. I had been prescribed a popular medicine for herpes. That particular medicine over time can cause liver damage. Instead of turning to prescriptions, I keep my immune system at peak performance by eating healthy, exercising, and taking my Melaleuca vitamins daily. At first sign, I put the oil directly on the sore and it is gone within hours!!!! Now I'm at zero outbreaks per year versus before Melaleuca when I would have 4 or 5 per year.

I had a series of visits to my dentist, and I had more visits lined up. The stress of drilling and dental work seemed to bring on a cold sore several times. The next time I felt a slight "tingling" after seeing the dentist, which was the warning sign that a cold sore was starting, I used the Melaleuca Oil on a cotton swab and put it right at the corner of my mouth where I felt the tingling. Within a day, instead of a new cold sore, all the symptoms disappeared! I have used this method several times and each time it knocks the cold sore out of commission before it fully forms!
